What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is a unique address used to identify a specific point on the internet which allows users to access various websites with ease. Rather than remember complicated numerical IP addresses, users can simply enter a domain name into the address bar of their Internet Browser. For instance, Google can be accessed by using the domain name “google.com.” The domain naming system (DNS) provides the user-friendly naming system that transforms domain names into IP addresses.

Other features of a domain name still include: TLD (top-level domain) and 2LD (second-level domain). For example, “.com”, “.org” and “.net” are TLDs that specify the nature of the organization, purpose of the website, while the 2LD is the distinctive name the owner of such a website chooses. Therefore, in “example.com,” “example” is 2LD whereas “.com” is TLD.

Understanding domain names is pertinent to anyone wishing to set an online presence. A good domain name not only gives a proper name to the business but also demonstrates credibility and adds to the memorability. When businesses register their domain name, they club their identity online and build self-image that lures visitors and customers to their site.

To sum up, a domain name can actually be articulated as a basic thing of browsing on the internet, that makes access to websites easy for users, and has a very important role in online branding and marketing strategies.
