What is a Google Penalty?

A Google penalty is a significant action taken against a website for violating Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, resulting in a decrease in search engine rankings and visibility. This penalty can occur due to the use of black hat SEO techniques, such as keyword stuffing, cloaking, or acquiring unnatural backlinks. When Google detects these practices, it may impose a penalty to maintain the integrity of its search results.

The two types Google penalties: manual and algorithmic. A manual penalty is an action taken by a human reviewer on Google’s webspam team after detection of violations based on a manual review. Manual penalty notifications are communicated to the web owners through Google Search Console, stating the issues which needed to be fixed. In contrast, algorithmic penalties are automatically imposed by Google once the algorithms have been updated to target sites that do not conform to its set quality standards. Historically, much in the way of algorithmic penaltive updates, Panda and Penguin, let alone others, have drastically affected sites with weak or borderline content and manipulatively linking schemes.

An owner needs to understand well what a Google penalty entails because it can cause a site to lose most of its organic traffic, which would also mean a loss of conversions and will in turn contribute to the downfall of the business. This involves establishing what caused the refusal and commencing steps to remedy those issues, after which demand the reconsideration process with Google. Therefore, it is best considered that a website’s health, following Google penalties, dictates its readiness to those search engines that have a say in the introduction into their listings.
